A couple of weeks ago, as I was leaving the lodge, something caught my eye in the middle of the road. I slowed down and to my astonishment, a juvenile leopard stood up and moved to the side of the road. For a brief moment, we locked eyes, an unforgettable staring competition took place. Then with a flick of his tail he scampered off into the forest. What an incredible stroke of luck to witness such a beautiful creature up close!
We had a lovely and busy time in England, having left Nairobi on September 18th and arriving early morning on Friday, September 19th. Our friends Amarjit and Surinder were waiting for us with warm smiles and hugs at the airport. It was one of those autumn mornings, where the weather was pleasant on arrival, not too cold and no rain.
As we transition from the chill of winter into the warmth of summer, it's a time to embrace lighter clothes, longer days, and the beauty of blue skies and sunshine. The crisp winter air fades, and the warmth begins to creep in, bringing with it the excitement of outdoor adventures. A reminder that a new season of growth, relaxation and sunshine has arrived. With the warmer weather we will be introducing new dishes that are light, fresh and full of seasonal flavours. A fresh start full of energy and new ideas.
Nyeri is truly wrapped in the depths of winter with chilly days and cold nights. We are having to light the fire every night to take the chill away, adding a cosy and comforting ambience to the evenings. August, known as the second coldest month in Kenya, brings with it occasional rainy days that further enhance the cold. The persistent overcast skies and misty mornings have earned this time of the year the nickname “dreary Nyeri”. Roll on spring followed by warm sun kissed days.
July was a busy and eventful month for us. The lodge was bustling with guests from near and far. To enhance your dining experience at the lodge I have introduced new recipes. The rains have been good, and our turbine is working well.
In Kenya, June marks the start of the dry season, especially towards the end of the month. Coastal areas may still have some rain at the beginning, but it becomes drier and sunnier as the month progresses.
Hello everyone, it’s been a while and I hope you are all keeping well. The rains have brought a refreshing touch to Nyeri, making the rolling hills lush and beautiful.
A new year, a new start and a warm welcome to 2024, may your year be filled happiness, good health, and prosperity.
As we bid farewell to 2023, with a mixture of emotions and experiences, from happy moments such as family weddings, births and South Africa winning the rugby world cup to the sombre realities of the passing of family members and friends and to the tragedies in places like Gaza and others.
This month I have chosen to write about the Sykes monkeys which are one of my favourites. Encountering them along the way to Cedar Retreat from Rhino gate is a wonderful opportunity for me to observe these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
The countdown begins to Christmas with only a few weeks to go. What a busy year, engagement parties, two weddings and another over the Christmas week and the rugby world cup.

Interesting Facts/Chirps about Chickens
We have a rooster and a hen at home, and I thought I would share some interesting information about these fascinating birds, these facts are so true. I call the rooster Crazy Cuckoo as he is always doing crazy things and the hen is called Henrietta. She produces lovely eggs with a rich yellow yolk, influenced by a healthy diet of nutrients.
