Unwind amongst sounds of nature as you get in your daily exercise and learn about birds, trees, shrubs and the history of Kenya's lungs, the Aberdares.
The Aberdares is home to at least 5 endemic bird species? Can You guess? Book in a guided bird tour with our bird experts and jet off into the forest and environs - the Hartlaubs Turaco is quite a treat to spot!
Therapeutic and right at our doorstep, the game viewing tree deck is a favourite with guests. Elephants, buffalo, zebra, and antelope frequent the water hole too. In the trees that fringe the waterhole (and accompanying mud bath and salt-lick below) you can hear colobus monkeys calling.
The Northern moorlands of the Aberdares offers some of the finest trekking in its isolated wilderness. Both of the aforementioned peaks make great day hikes, with stunning views as your rewards. We may be able to arrange a sundowner too! * Please note Advance booking required.
Its the highest peak in the Aberdares and 3rd highest in Kenya (4,000m). For some it's about the climb, and others about the view from the top. Whatever your reason, this is definitely a beautiful peak to be on.
* Advance booking required.
Bolts have been set in the rock for the technical climbs available on Twin peaks, for those who are experienced. Guided rock climbing can also be arranged on these peaks, followed by a well deserved drink, a great meal and a warm bed at Cedar Retreat afterwards.
* Advance booking required.
We have 2 adult & 2 Children bikes but for larger groups, guests will need to bring their own bikes. We also have completed a small route (inside the Retreat's boundaries) for children. Please ensure to check with the lodge on the availability of guides. * Advance booking advised.
This part of the Aberdares is the least explored and is a myriad of birds, forest and open moorland. A large part of visitors to the Northern section of the Aberdares National Park prefer to walk and participate in other physical, outdoor pursuits. However, game drives can be arranged with prior notice, to other parts of the Aberdares, with a picnic.
